Five source-verification habits that save investigations

Every investigator has experienced the rush of a breakthrough finding. A single source that seems to answer everything. But experienced analysts know: one source is a lead, not a conclusion.

Here are five habits that transform good investigations into defensible intelligence:

  1. Triangulate before you report. Require at least two independent sources before elevating a finding to "confirmed."
  2. Document source quality. Not all sources are equal. Rate each by reliability and relevance.
  3. Timestamp everything. Capture when you accessed each source — URLs change, pages disappear.
  4. Hash your evidence. SHA-256 hashing takes two minutes and turns "trust me" into provable integrity.
  5. Separate collection from analysis. Record raw findings first, then interpret. It prevents confirmation bias.
